Description
Responsible for barley breeding & research activities, and be the bridge for implementing research learnings into the Agriculture program
Responsibilities
1) R&D for ABI India
· Guide R & D team towards the development of malt barley varieties adapted to Indian conditions.
· Drive strong collaboration between Global Barley Research and India R&D
· Developing and implementing new ideas, developments and techniques on breeding in general, technology and biotechnology, in order to apply those ideas in the crop policy plan
· Coordinating with internal and external stakeholders like a global RD team, raw materials, maltsters, universities, agriculture government officials, seed growers etc
· Drive, develop and foster strong ABI culture of continuous improvement withing R &D team
· Coordinates R&D budget preparation and presentation within the domestic and global teams. Monitor budget spend related to project goals and coordinates budget adaptations as they relate to the portfolio in collaboration with the global R&D management Team.
2) Research Trials - Breeding and Crop Management
· Preparing the breeding program, taking into account the variety, surroundings, type of soil, climatological conditions, growing process and so on, including details such as the amount of seeds to be sown, sowing time, pollination time and harvesting time and crossbreeding programs
· Planning and Execution of breeding/ crop management trials.
· Implementing the screening and collecting breeding/crop management trials data.
· Executing multi location testing of advanced breeding trials.
· Carrying out field screening and evaluation of the varieties based on agronomical and micro-malting parameters.
· Planning and executing barley crossing, breeding programs as per approved and agreed protocols.
· Screen and evaluate the varieties on the basis of agronomical and micro-malting parameters; discussions with maltsters, brewers and other stakeholders in the selection of a suitable malting variety
· Screening and collecting the data, germplasm, breeding techniques on developments in malt barley breeding and adopting those for the breeding and development of malt barley varieties in India
· Maintaining the germplasm diligently, ensuring varietals purity and exclusivity; maintain breeding stock and basic seed Making critical reports and presentations to the organisation internally, for reviews and approvals
· Constantly communicate findings with colleagues, team-mates and farmers and create a defined system for doing the same
· Lead the development of crop management protocol for ABI approved varieties. Align with global R & D to develop and follow best crop management practices
· Be involved in plot designs and experimental procedures, and hence support in driving the crop management trial process
3) Agronomic implementation
· Assist field officer and agronomists with respect to queries on crop stress, drought pressure, fertilizer and seed application, irrigation management, etc.
· Work towards regular monitoring & review of the overall KPI’s of our farmers’ crop management process / practices
· Troubleshooting technical problems that arise in crop management protocol, seed production, and farmers complaints.
· Drive the soil health nutrition improvement process as the team’s technical expert
· Managing and planning seed production/multiplication/treatment, quality monitoring
· Required to travel across Rajasthan, Haryana, MP, UP and other states for training team and farmer-groups on best agriculture practices for barley
· Making critical reports and presentations to the organization internally, for reviews and approvals
